Course Description:

RATIONALE

Networking and data communications is a very large subject area. The purpose of this module is to provide students with an overview of this broad topic and, therefore, to lay the foundations of knowledge and skills necessary for the study of more specific modules to be delivered later in the course. The module will begin by briefly outlining what data communications and networking is and will explore some of the benefits that networking provides. The Open Systems Interconnectivity (OSI) 7-layer reference model will then be introduced. This model will be explored to gain an understanding of the requirements and underlying technologies of each layer, how each can be implemented effectively, and what service each provides to support the layer above. This will lead to the introduction and exploration of the TCP/IP Routing Suite (the 5-layer Internet reference model), this being the model which is most commonly deployed in the majority of modern-day networks.

AIMS

The aims of the module are:

  • To provide a broad overview of the topics of data communications and networking.
  • To introduce the OSI 7-layer reference model and to gain an understanding of the requirements and underlying technologies of each layer.
  • To gain an understanding of how each layer of the OSI model can be implemented effectively.
  • To gain an understanding of the services that each layer of the OSI model provides to support the layer above.
  • To gain an understanding of the TCP/IP Routing Suite and how this is implemented in the construction of modern-day networks.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of essential facts and concepts relating to data communications and network technologies as defined using hierarchical protocol systems such as the OSI 7-layer model and the TCP/IP Routing Suite;
  2. Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of network physical characteristics such as cabling, network topologies, etc.;
  3. Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of network addressing concepts;
  4. Make effective use of information-retrieval skills;
  5. Manage their own learning and development;
